A gnome of my own

As much as I like Pinterest and enjoy collecting all the ideas and inspiration, some times I indulge myself by purchasing a craft magazine. There's nothing quite like getting it home and flipping through the pages. Searching for the first project to do is remininscent of flipping through the Sears Christmas catalog when I was a child.
I recently bought this one (sorry about the bad picture)


I found several projects that I want to do but first one the list was this


Oh but darn, I don't have all the materials needed to make one. No matter, a little shopping trip and I'll be good to go. WRONG! This is made with wood ball knobs and would you believe that I could not find them in the stores I was in? Just my luck, that's always happening to me. Again I say, "No matter, I'll wing it and make it a gnome of my own" And that is just what I did.

Instead of using wood balls for his head and body I used fabric. Mine doesn't look quite like the ones in the picture and he has no beard but I find him rather cute.
Here he is sitting on my desk guarding my keyboard while I'm away from my computer.

If by chance you don't hear from me today it could be that Sandy is causing problems. As I write this (Monday night to be scheduled for Tuesday morning) the rain is coming down in buckets and we are expecting high wids with gusts up to 60 mph. We are keeping a close watch on the basement because we always have a bit of a flooding problem. Tomorrow, if all goes well, I'll give you an update on how things are shaping up around here with the weather.

Meet my other friends Monday

Monday's are so much easier to deal with when I have a little help from my friends. Since I think I've got the greatest friends on earth I want to share them with everyone. Monday's are dedicated to the best bloggers I know, my pals. You could be next.

This weeks friend keeps me in stitches with her Comedy Plus. When Sandee isn't sharing a good joke she thrills you with her adventures on the high seas. Ok so maybe they aren't high sea adventures but her and her husband do spend a lot of time on their boat and she's shown us some wonderful sites. You might also enjoy her comment games or Wednesday's question. An all around fun blog with a fun author. We love Sandee and I know you will too. Duke says she's his favorite because she never fails to mention him in her comments here.

1) How long have you been blogging and what made you start?

I've been blogging since January 2006, and I think I started out of curiosity. I knew very little about blogging and it showed the first year or so. Then I met Empress Bee, and Sandy Bell and pretty soon I was visiting them and they were visiting me. Then I met more bloggers in their circle and those gals are still my blogging buddies. Many of my early blogger buddies I've met. That's the really cool thing about blogging, you can make plans to visit those folks that you so enjoy. 
2) What is one piece of advice you would give to a new blogger?

If you like a blog you'll eventually like the person that authors the blog. You become attached. I've seen lots of bloggers that post a post, you visit them and leave a comment, but they never visit you. If you want a following you need to reach out to those folks you like.
3) Do you have any hobbies or special talents?

Everyone that knows me, knows I don't have a crafty bone in my body. I do have a great hobby though. It's called boating. We boat year around on the California Delta. The picture that I sent Ann is a boat like ours, so don't think you're seeing our boat. We have a Sea Ray Sundancer.
4) Of course you love all the blogs you visit but share a link to one of those and tell us why we should check it out.

It's hard to just pick one blog, but since that's the question I'll choose Empress Bee of muffin53 part deux. She's a lovely southern belle that lost the love of her life the first part of this year to cancer. She promised her hubby that she would lose weight and as of this writing she's lost 70+ pounds. She's got a great sense of humor and you never know what she'll say next. She's an avid Carnival Cruise Lines cruiser and has so many cruises under her belt I lost count. I love her to pieces and she's one of the bloggers I've had the pleasure to meet.
5) What is the one things that totally makes you crazy?

Word verification and comment moderation both being used. If you're going to moderate comments then why would make us do word verification. It just doesn't make sense.
6) Give one random thought.

Will all of you be as happy as I am when this election is over? I thought so.

Nothing much

Saturday was cold and rainy and not much of anything got done.
I did take a picture through the window.


All the rain on the window made it a bit blurry though. I took another one through the top of the window since it wasn't quite as wet.


Then I plopped my butt down in front of the computer and wasted almost an entire day there.

Wasted rainy days doing things that don't require a lot of thought or energy are themselves autumn blessings.

And another thing

I guess since I told you earlier in the week that I had made two little projects last Sunday, I could show you the other one.
I saw a tutorial for a needle book and I happen to need one since needles always end up all over the place and I can never find one when I need one.
Now mind you, hers is way fancier than mine and I didn't totally follow the tutorial. I looked at the pictures, read the measurements and then just threw this together really quick. It was getting a bit late and I just wanted to finish it.



Oh look how neatly I lined up my needles....NOT.I didn't even get the inside pages put in there very evenly. They are a little too close to the bottom but really, who cares.

I have a few other projects in the works, maybe I'll finish them this weekend or at least get the closer to being finished.

Oh my stars

Wow, it's Thursday already. This week sure is flying by. I'm not complaining though. I can't wait for the weekend. Not that there are any exciting plans for those two days but you know how I love my weekends.

Itty Bitty Pumpkin

I mentioned yesterday that I did a few "little" things on Sunday in hope of jump starting my craft ambition.
I kind of sort of but not exactly followed a tutorial that I saw for fabric tube pumpkins. (I would also give you a link to her blog but I get email updates and it's not in my reader and I can't for the life of me remember the name of the blog) Any way, I saw kind of sort of but not exactly followed the tutorial because I didn't actually read the tutorial yet. I pinned it to make later. Then Sunday night I was thinking about it and I had a little scrap piece of fabric sitting there. I figured just sew it into a tube, close up the ends, stuff it and stick in a stem. This is what I ended up with.


In case you are thinking that it doesn't look so itty bitty, here's another picture.

I'll eventually make some more in a bigger size but I kind of like this little one.

Meet my other friends Monday

This weeks friend is Sandie also known as Chatty Crone. I had seen Sandie's comments on other blogs I follow but wasn't familiar with her blog. One day I decided I needed to drop by and pay her a visit just to see what the Chatty Crone was all about. I am so glad I did. Sandie is one of the nicest people I've met in blog land. She's full of humor and inspiration. She makes me smile, she makes me laugh, she makes me think. Then just for variety she treats you to her grandson, her dog Disco and a few yummy recipes now and then. If you don't know her....well then...you should.

1.How long have you been blogging and what made you start?
 
I’ve been blogging since September 2006. I started blogging for my grandson. I wanted a place he could go back to someday and learn who his grandma was. What she did and why she did certain things. And as a journal about his life with his grandma - to remember the things that we did together.

I then got side tracked and I think my blog has metamorphosed into something else as well. My blogging friends have become my extended family. So now I am doing it for me as well. Blogging makes me happy. I’ve found so many great people out there. The world of blogging and bloggers are great. I have a tiny nuclear family, but in blog land I have a huge family! And I truly feel close to them.

2. What is one piece of advice you’d give to new bloggers.

The one thing I wished I had done – was to have kind of a theme. For example crafts, thrifting, table scapes, baking, cooking – I would have some thing or some word to describe my blog – because I feel it is very random. Sometimes I can be all over the place, but then on second thought – that does kind of describe who I am. Now when I think back I would have changed my name to Chatty Crone – laugh and lift. I just saw that somewhere. I love to laugh and I love to try to uplift people. I think the two go together.

3. Do you have any hobbies or talents?
 
Well I guess it depends on what you count as hobbies and talents. I do have a love for friends and for praying for people. I love to read just about anything. My blog is my true hobby. I thrift a little. I take photos a little. I volunteer a little at school for my grandson. I’ve bake a little. I try new recipes a little. I cook a little. I do a little bit of everything – guess that is why my blog is random. Like I say I think that is me. I think I could also be Chatty Crones Little Thoughts. (LOL)

4. Of course you love all the blogs you visit but share a link to one of those and tell us why we should check it out.

That would be Susan from Writing Straight From the Heart – (please know that I really hate picking just one. It’s hard. There are a few I really, really love and that I’m close too.) I think Susan’s blog has a great theme and I think she does speak from her heart. It’s very colorful and bright. She’s sincere and upbeat. She dedicated and she’ll always answer you back.


5. What is one thing that totally makes your crazy?

 Not to be listened to – not to be respected. To not have MY OWN VOICE. I think that’s because I did not have a voice while growing up. Being heard is important to me!

6. Give one random thought. Gosh I could give a lot of random thoughts.

My favorite verse I like to meditate on is: Philippians 4:4-9
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Why my wallet is empty

So does anyone want to see what I spent all my money on when we went to Christmas in the woods? I surprised myself by buying so much. Normally even though I see a lot of things I like I'm too cheap to actually buy them. This was a different story though. Maybe I was just always looking for the wrong things.
First up is this box. I was torn between buying this and a wood star that I really liked. In the end the box won out. There's a candle cup inside but I didn't have a candle when I took the picture.
 


This is a bad picture but this is a bench that I bought for Wade's cave. The color of the wood was perfect. It came with two cushions. One your choice of anything and the other was a Christmas print.

This guy is probably my favorite purchase. I thought it was totally adorable. Normally you see these on a wood candle stick. I was surprised to find out that the base is a clear glass candle stick that was painted with a textured paint. What an awesome idea.

Last item was another one for the cave. I really liked these wood pine trees. They come completely apart and they had them in all different kinds of wood.  I think this was a honey locust.
There was one other item that I wanted to buy and had planned to stop and get it on the way out because it was right by the gate we came in. Unfortunatley I forgot.

Christmas in the woods

The trip on Saturday was to Columbiana Ohio to go to Shaker Woods, Christmas in the woods craft show. We've been there a few times and it's always enjoyable. The place is huge and of course it's all set up in the woods.

Although it was a bit cold to start out, it was a beautiful day and this place was packed. This is a shot of the parking lot before we left. We were parked maybe 8-10 rows back and just look at all the cars that came in after us.

These next two are near one of the gates and just before you got to the ticket booth


While we were walking around we decided to take a picture of the area. We weren't aiming at any particular booth. A woman who happened to be selling there took it upon herself to come up to us and inform us that we really shouldn't be taking any pictures unless we asked permission first. She told us that she wouldn't like it if someone took pictures of her items.

These were the pictures I was taking at the time and I told her I was just taking shots of the area. Does it look like I'm pointing the camera at anyone's merchandise?


I wish I would have been a little quicker I could have said to her "Don't worry, I didn't like your stuff well enough to take a picture of it". I bet that would have shut her up real quick.

A beautiful autumn morning

Last Saturday as I was headed out to meet my friend Debbie I was treated to beautiful sights on my drive. It was cold and there was frost on the ground but the sun was shining and it looking like a great day ahead.




I'm not quite sure but by the looks of things today I would say we just might be at our peak for fall color. There are quite a few trees that have already lost all their leaves with the wind and rain we got yesterday.

This weeks friend is Marie from Spun by Me. Marie and I share a lot of the same interests. We definitely share the love of crafting and she is a very talented lady. Craftiness isn't her only talent though, she also has a knack for being one of the sweetest people I've met in the blogosphere. Oh and she has some super cute little grandchildren that she shares on her blog too.

1) How long have you been blogging and what made you start?

I started blogging in July of 2008...the same year my first wo grandchildren were born. It's because of them that I started my blog. I wanted to have a venue to "show off" my sweet grandbabies to my mom and extended family living far away. It also seemed like a great way to "journal" about my life. I've never been real good at writing in a journal but I've stuck with my blog for over four years...so I think hat' a good thing. A reallynice bonus to having the blog has been the nice people I've come to know!

2) What is one piece of advice you would give to a new blogger?

Blog for yourself. Don't dwell on what other people might want to read. Blog what matters to you. Blog with honesty. Blog without obligation. Don't worry about how many comments you get....just write from your heart (or your funny bone as the case may be). Hmmmm....I guess that's more than one piece of advice.......

3) Do you have any hobbies or special talents?

I love to read....wish I had more time to do it. I like to create too. I'm not a painter or a knitter or a sewer. I'm not an artist...I've decided that I'm a "maker of things". I just like to take stuff and make other stuff. Not sure that makes sense...but it's what I like to do. Of course I need to accumulate stuff, so I also really love thrifting. In fact, it's one of my very favorite things to do!

4) Of course you love all the blogs you visit but share a link to one of those and tell us why we should check it out.

One of my favorite blogs is Sweet Cottage Dreams. I've been reading Becky's blog almost as long as I've been writing mine. I love her decorating & her home, her writing, her dogs...I admire (so much) her faith in God. I live on the east coast, she lives on the west. 5) What is the one things that totally makes you crazy?

Negative people. We all have "junk" in our lives...but I really try not to dwell on the "junk" in mine. I especially try not to share it regularly with others.

I love the Bible verse Philippians 4:8. "Whatever is true. Whatever is noble. Whatever is right. Whatever is pure. Whatever is lovely. Whatever is admirable. If anything is excellent or praiseworthy. Think about such things."

If we all did that....there'd be a whole lot less negative people to deal with. : )

6) Give one random though.

The word "listen" contains the same letters as the word "silent".

The devil you say

I know how all of you feel about Duke. I know that you all think he's just a little angel. I'm here to tell you that, although Duke does have his adorable and loving side, there's a dark side lurking in the shadows.
I know, I know, some of you are shaking your heads now in disbelief. I was prepared for that reaction and am going to provide you with photographic proof that Duke can be a little devil.

Not only are his horns showing but I do believe that he has the evil eye down pat.
