The scoop

Wow, the last week has been something. My mind has not been able to focus on taking care of this blog or even reading your or my emails.
One of the things that I've never mentioned about myself is that I am a smoker. Last Tuesday night at 7p.m. I smoked my last one. No patch, no pill, no gum, just cold turkey done with them. Now it's a matter of fighting the urge to break down and smoke just one little cigarette. They say that it only takes 72-96 hours to get past the addiction to nicotine but after that there is still the urge to go back. To make matters worse, I'm getting a cold or something so instead of being able to go out and take a walk I've come home from work every day and flopped on the couch until bed time.

We are at least greening up and the pear blossoms have finally made an appearance.

Saturday we went to Duboise to attend Wade's daughters graduation from Penn State. While I'm sitting there in the auditorium my phone starts ringing first my daughter calling, then my son. I text them back to tell them where I'm at and can't answer the phone. So they both ask me what happened to my brother's daughter. What? How should I know and what are you talking about? It was all over facebook that my 23 year old niece passed away Saturday morning.

So I head off to work today still wanting a cigarette but still saying no. I'm praying for strength for my brother and his wife that they can carry on.

If I have any focus left once I get home from work I'll attempt to get caught up with all of you.

Ann, I am sorry to hear of your niece's passing. Way too young. Prayers to your brother and family and you as well.

Congrats on quitting smoking! You can do it, I did and I never looked back. Fight the urge, do not have that one little cig! I did cold turkey too. Go to quintet.com. That website is awesome. It can tell you how many days, minutes, hours, seconds you have been smoke free. How many days of your life you will gain and best if all, how much money you are saving. The message boards really help too. I can still go on there after 10 years of being smoke free and see my stats. As soon as I get off these dreaded Sat work days, we have to go to Pat Catans and Joann Fabrics in Hermitage. We need to get crafting as Aug will be here before you know it. Take care.

That is a dreadful week - All those ups and owns...But way to go on the smoking cessation. My husband and I smoke - he won't even make an effort and while I have cut down a lot it's hard when the person you live with smokes.

Condolences to your family -

I am so sad to hear about our brothers daughter, and so happy to hear you laid down the cigarettes. Hang in there, i am told by hubby that when things get tough on a smoker that stopped it gets harder... hold on and stay strong. congrats to the Penn state grad. hope you feel better today.

Oh Ann, what a time of highs and lows for you and your family. I've long been impressed by what a determined person you are when it comes to trying something new in the craft world, readying for a show, or even just responding so kindly to blog comments. Keep on harnessing that strength to get through this rough stretch one day at a time; I know you can do it.

Ann- So Sorry about your niece. That doesn't help you in your quest to quit smoking, I'm sure. But I know you will stay strong. What an accomplishment to give it up! Prayers.

Congratulations on quitting smoking. You can do it..just take one day at a time. I did and it's been 20 years. Definitely worth it! Good luck.

I'm so sorry about your niece. What a shame. Prayers for your entire family.

Way to go on the quitting smoking. You can do it you just have to say no all the time and then one day you won't even think about having a smoke. I know because I quit smoking in 2005 (June 16). Wait till you take that first deep breath. It's awesome.

Big healing hugs. My best to Duke. :)

Oh, I'm SO SORRY!!!!! What happened to her? Does she live close, will you be going to the funeral? BRAVO to you!!! Your health will be so much better once you get past this!!! My mom quit this way, and my grandmother too, after smoking a pack a day for many years. They went cold turkey because there was just nothing back then, and my mom's doctor told her she would die if she didn't quit. But why are you going cold turkey?? If it gets too bad, please don't give up, but get the patch or something. We are all rooting for you!!!

And oh my gosh that is so sad about your niece - I don't know how in the world someone can survive that. My heart goes out to them.

You didn't pick a good time to quit, did you -- but there's never a good time.

I am living proof that you CAN quit smoking and to it cold turkey. I used to smoke 3 packs a day. Did so for over 10 years. I quit cold turkey back in 1981. I've never had another one since. In fact, the smell of cigarette smoke now gives me a headache. Keep hanging in there and you WILL succeed!
