I stopped in around five yesterday to pick up a prescription. Simple errand. In and out. I grabbed a few other things and headed to the front to check out.
There was one register open. One young man cashing, another bagging. The lane next to them had the light on, but no one was there. So I got in line behind the person already checking out. Someone else lined up behind me.
Then a third person walked right up to the empty lane, unloaded his stuff, and—like magic—the bagger suddenly became a cashier. He walked over, rang that man up, and never once looked at me or said, “I can take you over here.” Nothing. Just… poof, new lane for someone else.
While I was still waiting, the cashier in my lane pulled out his phone and fired off a quick text. Right in the middle of the transaction. No attempt to hide it.
My turn finally came. He had an earbud in, singing along to whatever he was listening to. No hello. No eye contact. No acknowledgment that I was an actual customer standing there paying for my things. Just scanning and humming like he was in his own world.
By the time I walked out, I was grumpy enough to bite through steel. And all I could think was: this is exactly why I hate Walmart.
But the universe must’ve decided I needed a reset, because as I was leaving—still grumbling to myself—I saw a duck herding her little ducklings away from the road and back toward the pond. Just this determined mama waddling her babies to safety. And I’ll be honest: it made me smile in spite of myself. A tiny reminder that the world isn’t all earbuds and bad customer service.

SO uncouth! Seems like in Wal-Mart, manners have no place.
Oh your description of the Mama duck and her babies made me smile :)
baby ducks are heartwarming, I love to see them follow the Mama duck. That makes no sense, and I am assuming they were young men, and they don't make good cashiers. I use the self check out so don't know what ours cashiers are like. well used to, now I order and have it delivered
A happy reminder like that is so necessary.
I'm so glad the mama duck was able to snap you out your mood.
I do NOT like Walmart either and only go if I have no other choice.
OMDs I agree that was a most unpleasant visit. What the heck texting and no Official WalMart Greeting..YIKES.
Very lucky for you Mama ducky had her babes all in a line just for you.
Hugs cecilia
I've not shopped at WalMart in years and years. I'm sorry this happened to you.
Awww on the duck and her ducklings. So precious. It's so precious I linked this post to Awww Mondays.
Have a fabulous day and week, Ann. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to handsome Gibbs. ♥
It isn't the store, but the sort of people working these days. I usually force people to talk to us...nicely, of course. The young people need to learn how to engage customers. It's maddening.
Sorry it was not a fun shopping trip at Wally's. I don't shop there and haven't for years and years. Just no thank you. Hopefully, I never live in an area where they ONLY have a Wally. LOOOOVE the duckies that you saw. Great way to un-grump. Happy Monday!
Mom hates going to Walmart but she still goes now and then and always has a lousy experience. Since she knows how awful it is, she can't blame anyone but herself for going there. Sometimes it is just the best deal or they have something no one else seems to have.
I do most of my shopping at Walmart and WinCo ... not because I think its wonderful but the prices are so much less than Safeway and Ralleys. Its pretty convenient and usually has what I need. The help is definitely something else!! So many of the young people are in a world of their own and don't seem to understand how communicating with humans face to face is a Good Thing. If its not on a screen it is invisible !
Ok rant is over
Love your duckies and how they made you feel. A breath of fresh air.

This is the second Walmart rant I've read in as many days. Is it the Walmart mindset or is it the caliber of employees, I wonder. This person was so taken aback by the encounter she has complained to the store, corporate and everywhere else she can find. I've never set foot in a Walmart, there aren't any nearby and besides I don't have a car to drive to one. I did order something online from them, once, and the package was lost!
That's why we do the self check out! :)
Nice that a little thing like seeing the ducks can turn your day around.
The very same thing happened to me at BJ's today. So frustrating. The ducks were a welcomed relief!
Boo to walmart, hurray for the ducks!
Hi Ann, I have hated Walmart for years. Thanks for sharing.
Drives me crazy the work ethic of a lot of young people these days! I know a lot of people hate it but that's why I love the self check out. I don't have to deal with anyone's attitude but my own!
Seriously, that is so rude. I can't believe he did that and was singing and didn't acknowledge you. That is really sweet about the duck protecting her ducklings.
I'm glad those ducks turned up for you, sounds just what you needed after that experience.
