This post is unscented

Over the years I have developed a sensitivity to strong scents. This includes perfumes, some cleaning products and some laundry products and lotions. Anything really strong will put me in to coughing fits and then I just have a hard time breathing. People at work know this. I've had a sign up going in to our area asking people to not wear perfume or cologne. This should be enough right? WRONG!  People still come in highly scented with something and swear they have nothing on. They ask someone else to smell them as proof that it's not them. I feel like they think I'm making it up. Aside from the ones who work in my area there are other employees who load themselves up with perfume and I won't even get in to All the customers who marinate in their perfume.
Maybe I should just start wearing a gas mask.

So tell me, what are your thoughts on people who feel the need to wear strong perfumes

I'll tell you what my thoughts are. Strong perfume is specifically for the people around the one who wears it, because they want to smell good. But if the effect is the opposite, and they make someone sick instead...shouldn't they care enough to not wear it around around you? We need to be respectful of those we work with. Plus, any kind of perfume just cannot smell good when mingled with bakery smells. In fact, I think that food workers should not be allowed to wear perfume. I wish I had an answer for you. It is sad that people will do this.

Maybe because they need a bath. LOL I like to throw some on after shaving.

I can relate to what you are saying. I don't work in an office but I do encounter people all the time who wear too much perfume or cologne. With my lungs it really makes me gag. They never think how it might effect the people around them. Sorry you have that problem at work.

Certain perfumes bring me up in hives if they get on my skin.
I don't like the strong smell of washing liquid/powder that some people smell of.
Glossy magazines always take my breath away.
I think we are all getting a bit hyper sensitive in this funny world.

I don't care for perfume either. I don't wear anything but lotion (not scented) and deodorant. I don't have reactions to perfume, but some are just awful. I usually say whatever that person is wearing is the 50 cents a gallon perfume.

Have a fabulous day. Big hug to you and tons of scritches to Gibbs. ♥♥♥

i am the same way you are, our favorite Culvers for burger place, the 80 year old woman who busses the tables almost chokes me to death when she walks by. she must douse herself. when i waited tables, we were told never wear a scent, it is rude to the diners. in a public place i move away, i have been known to gather up my plate and glass and tell the waitress why we are moving. it started about 10 years ago but in the past 2 years, i really cough and choke. when bob puts the chorine in the pool, i have to come in the house. it is a real problem...

Just like you with an extreme sensitivity to scents, there are those who cannot smell anything...and they drown themselves in their cologne, unknowing that it reeks.

I don't know how you can regulate personal habits (lotions, colognes, etc.) in the workplace, but I can imagine it is really frustrating. I wonder what others do in this situation?

If people are working in close quarters then accommodation must be made, even if someone isn't allergic. Twice I took a jobs where I was told that I could not wear any kind of scent, and then on like my second day there, the supposedly allergic person came to work reeking of perfume/cologne. I don't know what kind of power play/perversity that was all about but I didn't stay long in either job because that behavior was exhibited in every aspect of the job/office.

My mom is like that also. I am pretty okay unless it is a strong floral scent. I can't believe the women and some men that will wear stuff so strong that you wonder how they stand theirselves.

I'm gonna answer before I go back and read others points of view. Ready?

I can't stand heavy, over-sweet perfumes!! A light scent of something fresh and airy is okay unless it's slathered on. Have you ever been to a movie theater with dozens of scents mixed with stale popcorn & rancid seasonings? --- 'nough to make you sick!

I'm with you! I hate it! Some perfume makes me sick to my stomach. I like essential oils though they don't bother me - maybe because they're pure and not fake and chemical.

Strong perfume gives me a headache so I can't be around it long. I can't handle the smell of coffee, cigarettes or exhaust either. I avoid all of those things as much as I can.

I can't tolerate it. Good luck trying to convince people who can't apparently smell.
