Because of a comment

Sometimes reader comments inspire a new blog post. Yesterday I talked about the day off that wasn't and Lin said
It's nice, I guess, that they call you with offers of extra work. They know you are a good worker and they can count on you. 5 hours isn't too bad--I would have went in too. Maybe they can make you a manager or something and give you more money!

Well the truth is at one time I was a salaried manager. For the most part, I hated the job. I worked mostly nights and I was always stressed out. When Wade and I got married I finally told the boss that I wanted to go back to the bakery, which is where I had been for quite some time before I went out on the floor as a manager there. My current position is bakery manager.

Well during a conversation with the boss last week, he made the comment that he should put so and so in the bakery and put me back out on the floor. I told him so and so hates baking and if you recall I hated that job. I am however more than willing to do extra work and help out in other parts of the store as needed. It's nice to have a little break from the usual daily routine and of course extra money in the paycheck is always welcome.

So the boss continues to come to me and ask me to do this extra job or that extra job and being the good little worker bee that I am I say OK.

I remember this story! I am glad you did not let money make you do a job you hate. Life is too short. I guess you will do anything ELSE except be manager. That can be such a stressful job, with pressure. Baking smells good and makes people happy.

I agree, avoid jobs you hate even if they pay more! And getting some variety helps too.

A break in routine is always good. For anything in life.

HAVE A GREAT and PEACEFUL holiday Ann (and Giblets)!

I was always open to doing extra things on the job but I also learned that once you showed you could do extra stuff, you were always the one they came to....without the extra pay! You are a good employee and you do your job well so they know they can depend on you. Great job Ann.

i was happy to read that the store owner recognized your years or service and excellent work with assistance in stocking YOUR pantry. I'm sure it would be a difficult trade off for him to take you away from the bakery where you do awesome work and having you as a floor manager where, I'm sure you excel as well. I suppose offering you the extra hours you need at this time becomes a win-win for the store owner and a win for you as long as you don't over-extend yourself. (Tho I still think back to when management screwed around with your days off because of an inept employee which was so not fair but perhaps you have come to appreciate having a week day off - but still, people should have 2 days off in a row, I think it is probably a bit more restorative.)

Ohhhh, I get it. I've done that myself--left the money for less stress and the ability to do the job I like and am good at. Good for you, Ann. I am glad that they offer you the chance to make a few extra dollars. Every little bit helps.

I...LOVE...This....Photo... of GIBBS... really perfect. so precious and sharp and clear... I did the same, went from team leader to mgr, toughed it out for ayear and back to team leader. being a mangers is not FUN... the way you are doing it, you get more $$$ and much less stress. one of my best people in my team came from Publix, she was floor manager. she quit and came to us because the last customer she went to help through a ham at her and hit her with it....

What a nice comment indeed. If you're not happy in what you're doing then it's not a good mix. I send you good vibes all the time and hope you can get through this bump in the road okay. You have lots of friends you know. If you need something all you need do is ask.

Have a fabulous day and a happy Thanksgiving, Ann. Big hug to you and lots of scritches to the handsome Gibbs. ♥♥♥

I've learned that more money is not always worth it especially if you don't feel like you are even doing a good job.

What is it they say? Variety is the spice of life

Yeah, being the way I am can sometimes lead to feeling like I'm being taken advantage of but I would rather be that than lazy so I deal with it

As bosses go, I can't complain about mine. I am used to the says off being broken up and it is nice to have a week day off for appointments and stuff but I still would prefer to have two together

Money just isn't always worth it and I never really felt like I was doing a good enough job. I like the bakery and I do think I'm good at it so that makes it more enjoyable. I can do just about everything in that store though, the only job I've never done is cut meat

I appreciate the gift of good vibes and they must be working. Things may not be perfect but I'm getting by. I feel truly blessed to have so many wonderful people in my life including the most amazing blog pals

Hi, Can't blame you for not wanting a Manager Job.... My son has just taken over the manager job at his business ---and what a shock to him. He loves the money --but the extra hours and headaches take the JOY out!!!!!!

Hope you and the family are getting together for Thanksgiving. You need a big dose of Presley......

Hugs,
Betsy
