Just one

Every year I take pictures of my hydrangea bush. I've had a few years where it hasn't bloomed at all and plenty where it's been loaded. This year I have exactly one flower on the whole bush.

My dad planted this for me either the first or second spring that we were in this house. It came from one of the bushes he had in his yard. For that reason alone, it's my favorite thing in my yard.

Brave little flower. I hope it is not feeling too lonely.

ooooh, yours is blue! mine is pink and only has a few blooms. two other plants of mine never bloom, so i don't have any secrets on how to get them to bloom.

I've always liked them and what baffles me is that they aren't always the same color

This one has been there for about 30 years and probably has only survived because I wasn't the one who planted it.

Yep, it's like my dad smiling down on me every time I see it

Isn't it though. Oddly, the flowers aren't always the same color and sometimes it will have multiple colors at the same time

Some years I get blue some purple and some pink. I've even had it bloom with more than one color. It's always a surprise

I know...this is one of my favorite blooms. I love them but like you, mine have not been blooming much for several years lately. So I looked up what to do for them and it amounts to feeding them at certain time of the year. I need to write it down and post it so I get it done this yr. It says to use phosphorus fertilizer and work into the soil early each spring. But it also talked about pruning. I have NEVER pruned mine. But I missed that time frame, it said a month after the last bloom. Mine have been gone longer than that. The best blooming season I had was the summer of 2010 - that was the year that Nashville had the historic floods, my creek came up way into the yard, taking in my bushes...the creek feeds off the near by lake so not only did it get lots of water it got the kind it needed I guess. That year my two bushes were so loaded it was unreal. I had to clip blooms to bring in cause they are reaching and laying on the ground. Try feeding yours this spring.

I can see why it's your favorite if it came from your dad. :)
