Hydrangea

I think I post this ever year but I haven't done it yet for 2020. There is a hydrangea bush in my front yard that my dad planted for me many many years ago. Some years it's blue, some years it's pink, some it's purple and some years it hasn't bloomed at all.

I never know if I should pull those dead looking sticks out so I just leave them alone.

On one side there is pink

On the other side there is blue

And there in the middle.

This is so cool! And I never heard of one changing it's color year to year.

I too think that's neat! I especially like that your father planted it for you.

I'm no gardener but I think the colour depends on the soil its growing in. maybe one side the soil is slightly different? Who know, probably not me, lol

No matter what color the blossoms, the fact your dad planted it is what counts in my book!

i love when they do that!!! Hydrangeas are my favorite bush...we just planted about a dozen more around the yard this year....and three are yet to bloom. ???? What's with that? The fact that we moved them three times might play a role!

The color is determined by acidity. Being so close to the house can affect the soil--the concrete leeches from the soil.

You can snap off the sticks easily. Nothing is coming back on those branches anymore.

It's lovely! I love hydrangeas!

Never could figure mine out. I had four planted right together, lots bigger then yours and it had pink, blue and purple on it.....what I could not figure out was that I always heard that it was the acid in the soil that made the color of the bush....my soil must have been totally MESSED up!!

I can't grow a hydrangea to save my life! That one is special if your dad planted it for you! My daughter has two that grow really nice!

I understand that the colour changes are do with the "soil composition" and that it's possible to adjust the colour with incorporation of xyz mineral/s...but love how the plant wants to show off a colour spectrum for you....

Hi There, I don't know much about Hydrangeas--but I've always loved them.... Interesting about the different colors...

You asked about pulling out the sticks... Don't ever PULL --or else the bulbs may come up too which you don't want. You can take some shears and trip the 'sticks' back as far as you want to....

Have a great day... Can't wait to see pictures of your Sunday with the family.

Hugs,
Betsy

So unusual with the different colors.
I personally would cut down the sticks.
