Such cute snowman! But wait...you get up at 4:20??? Yikes! Or maybe that was just to let Gibbs out, I hope so.
Well the answer is yes. I do get up at 4:20 almost every day. I start work at 6 because that's when it's time to make the donuts.
I actually get to work a half hour early so I can put the donuts in what's called a proof box. That is a box that uses a combination of heat and humidity to help the dough rise. Once I put the donuts in there then I go sit and read until it's time to punch in. Some people might think I'm crazy for doing that but if I don't then I'm standing around waiting for the donuts to be ready to fry. It just makes my life easier.
Getting up at 4:20 gives me plenty of time to get dressed and then sit and drink my coffee while I read blogs. On Sunday mornings however, I start work at 5:00 instead of 6:00. Sundays I get up at 4:00 and while that's plenty of time to get dressed and ready to go it doesn't give me time for coffee and blog reading.
Most stores with a bakery no longer fry their donuts. They are using a thaw and finish donut. They simply pull already fried donuts from a freezer and when they are thawed they finish them with glaze or frosting. While it's less work for the baker, the end product isn't nearly as good.

Yikes! I never surface until 9a.m. but then we don't go to bed until after midnight. Those donuts look scrumptious.

They're so good. But, oh so lethal. I'd prefer to get up about the time you do. I'm a morning person.
Thanks for the warning about the "thaw and finish" doughnut. I won't be fooled again.

Early riser here too. Anytime after 5:00. If I 'sleep in" it can't be past 8:00 or I am off whack all day.
Next time I eat a doughnut I shall have more respect for the person behind it. Ann, I cannot imagine getting up that early for work or anything else, lol. Well done, you.
I don't envy you getting up so early, but you know, I used to get up in the summer and go to work about 6:30 to avoid some of the heat of the day.
I so miss our grocery's donuts....they had the best donuts of any place around, and then came Krispy Creme...I don't know if that cut their business or what. But they were not near as good.
You're doing the donuts right. Good for you. I so remember getting up early every morning to go to work. So glad I don't have to do that anymore.

I get up at 3:30 so am not shocked to see this, since we often email/blog together early am.. I am totally shocked to see that donuts are not round but oblong. who knew? I sure did not. so you circle then and drop in to fry? yum
I assume 04:30 is nicer in the summer than it is in the dead of winter. I'm a morning person myself, but not as early as this. I'll think of your with admiration next time I'm eating a donut.

No wonder you are so exhausted when you get home! You must have to go to bed around 8:00! And why is it earlier on Sunday, does the bakery open earlier then? So managing a bakery, do you never want to eat any cake or cookies?
What a great advertisement for your bakery. If I lived in your town, your bakery would certainly be on my list of places to shop :) I could almost smell the donuts while reading this . . . I may have gain 5 pounds, LOL Does your boss know how dedicated you are to his business?

Ginny, bedtime is 9 but I often fall asleep on the couch watching tv before that. I go in earlier on Sunday because we have way more donuts to do and I often have an order or two. Sometimes the order are for 7 which is when we open the store. If I don't start until 6 I'm very rushed trying to get the donuts done before we open.
I agree with Connie, what an advertisement for your bakery. And I, too, hope you boss appreciates you. Enough to charge extra when people want too many colors on their cakes!
Good for you! There aren't many that have work ethics like that anymore. When I worked at the hospital I always got there an hour early before I punched in to do odd jobs that needed to be done-that saved me work later in the day.

I hope you clock in a little early to account for the putting the donuts in the proofing drawer. You should if you don't. I think your manager would agree that you should be paid...even if it is only 10 minutes or so.

well I guess someone has to do those early starts, I know when I used to want something on the way somewhere early, I expected the bakery shelves to be stacked.
I remember back in my earlier life I worked in a factory where they basically made perfumed and scented goods, like soap, aftershave, carpet cleaner liquid, flysray, talc. mens after shave, hair dyes and so on. I got to a point where all I wanted and I still do is "unscented" - of course your work clothes stunk, and if you went shopping after work, people would make comments!
I ended up off the factory lines and in the warehouse part...couriers would come in and say "wow, what a wonderful smell" we would nod and then when he went out, we would say "what smell" -....it just dissipated but you knew what he was talking about! Often that smell was a broken case of say 12 bottles of aftershave.
