New Nieghbors

We have an empty lot next to our house. I've always liked it because that means I only have a neighbor on one side of me. It seems that a new family decided that they wanted to put their home on that empty lot. They showed up a couple days ago.

I haven't seen a killdeer in ages. We used to have a lot of them around when I was growing up. In the second photo I think that possibly it is performing what Wikipedia referred to as a distraction display. They do this to protect nests and small chicks.
Over the course of the weekend I will hopefully catch up with everyone. Tomorrow there will be no post. Yes, can you believe I am taking the day off from posting on purpose? I'm going to the Healing Mother Earth Powwow with a friend of mine. It sounds interesting and it's certainly a good excuse to take some pictures. If you follow the link it will take you to a site that has a schedule of all of the Powwows in Ohio. You can also read what each of them has to offer. I don't know where my friend heard about it but she wanted to check it out so that's what we're doing.
Hope everyone is getting their weekend off to a good start.

Beautiful Kildeer, Ann. We don't have them here ---or at least, I haven't seen one.

Hope you have fun tomorrow. Sounds like fun!

We used to have a family of Kildeer that lived in our backyard when I was little. Whenever we'd go back there the mom would come out and screech and act hurt to keep us away from her nest. She was a great actress too because I believed her every time!

Hope you enjoy your weekend! The Powwow sounds like fun!

We used to have kildeers here all the time but there haven't been as many this year. It is so much fun when the babies are born and see them running so fast.
Hope you have fun at your Powwow. Can't wait to hear about it. Have a great time.

Great pictures of a nice looking bird. Good for you for taking some time off. I think I am going to take the month of August off and just have fun. Maybe not even turn on my computer.

You must have been close to the nest

I hope you don't go in if they ask you to participate in a sweat lodge ceremony at that Healing Mother Earth Powwow. Just remember what happened down in Arizona a couple of years ago.

Well, I'd rather have neighbours like those sweet birds than the "usual" kind ;-)
