I'm no artist

After doing a few household chores yesterday I sat down and played with some watercolors.

I'm no artist and I was really just playing around but I thought instead of just tossing them I could make them both into cards

Why do you say that you are not an artist?? That is NOT true! Look at how well you blended the foreground and the background. The flowers are adorable...and you have shadows! I think this is very much art--don't say that you are "not"....BE what you ARE!

Initially, I would compare my work to the others in my class...which is crazy because they have been painting for years. What I have learned is that their work is more like a photo...very clear definition of lines, subjects and perspective. My work is more "loose"...or so they say. It is free-flowing and there are no rules. My fellow artists tell me that is how they started out too, so that makes me happy. So, I guess what I am saying is...don't compare yourself or measure your work against others---everyone has their own style!

They are wonderful cards . . . and made by your very hands, with love.
Very pretty too!

I'm with Lynda Barry, just do it -- never ask the deadening questions, "Is this any good?", "Does this suck?" If you ever need encouragement try reading Drawing: For the Artistically Undiscovered. I love its attitude. :)

well my feelings already voiced, "you are an artist" - and you took the time to play around, that's what artists do, they find a new medium and they play around with it...it might not end up being their cuppa of tea, but they tried it out BUT wait then you posed them on easel for photo and THEN decided they are for cards...

next time you've at the card shop, look at the card covers...no doubt you will see some just like yours AND they've up for sale :-) made by artists just like you ... okay you probably don't want to churn out a million but maybe your own design will grace a printers stock run ...

Well thank you for thinking so

I suppose it depends on what your idea of an artist is....lol

Ann said...

Aww, thanks.

Ann said...

Well good or bad I did have fun doing them

OK, I will now BE what I AM and all because Lin says so :) My problem is just like you said, I compare to others when instead I should just be enjoying the process and creating my own style.

Sounds like a worthy read
