My thrifty ways

Now that you're all aware of my thrifty background, I can share a recent shopping experience. As you may, or may not know, I work in a bakery. My first job of the day is to fry donuts. (insert the groggy sounding "time to make the donuts") If you haven't guessed this is a bit messy. No matter how careful I am, I always get grease spots on my pants. For that reason alone I hate spending a lot of money on something I'm going to ruin. When I need new clothes for work I don't buy "NEW" clothes. I go to my favorite second hand store.
I walked out with four, count them four, new to me pairs of pants.

Now how much do you think you would spend on four pairs of pants, in excellent, like brand new condition?

You probably can't make out all the price tags but they total $21.60. BUT, one of the pairs was on sale so my bill was $20.15. Now is that a bargain or what?
Man I love that place.

Oh Ann, am shrieking! You've got a steal. I absolutely love second hand stores! I've bought some of my favorite stuff from those stores. You're dad is smiling!

Whoa! Fantastic deal! Congrats! Don't take the tags off so everyone will know what a smart shopper you are.

I love secondhand stores. I always walk out feeling great about the deals I've found there.

Way to go Ann. When I was still working I shopped for work clothes in consignment shops. I got some really great suits for a very reasonable price. I can so relate.

Have a terrific day. My best to Duke. :)

Tes, second hand is the best. This store is just awesome too, they have a little of everything and they are very particular about what they take in.

Bossy Betty I took the tags off but I made sure I told everyone what a deal I got.

Sandee. It's the best way to go. This shop checks over everything before they put it out. No stains or rips allowed.

WOO! I love finding second hand deals. Of course being ridiculously horse-poor, thrifty shopping is nothing short of mandatory. Congratulations girl, ya done good :o)

What a steal! I didn't know you worked in a bakery! My dream job.

I love going to the local thrift store :) haven't been in a while though - should stop in there this week and see what I can find.
Stop by my blog if you have a minute - you got a mention!

Yes! I do love a bargain. Lots of times you can walk out of a second hand store with name brands that you could never afford for just a few dollars. Nothing bad about that!

I love bargains too! You certainly got some great deal!

I worked in a bakery in high school and college but never got to fry the donuts. I was the one who put the icing on and the filling in donuts, kept the cases full and wrote names on birthday cakes. The 3am start was a doozy but I loved getting off work at 11am!

That's a great idea. We have one of those just down the street from us, but I've never even thought of getting clothes there. I think I need to get off my bottom and go over there and take a look.
Thanks for the tip!

Um, was this really about how thrifty you are or that you are a size 4, which is most definitely in the "hubba hubba" range? (Tell Duke not to laugh too hard at me for not seeing that I had written "thirty" instead of "thrifty" the first try.)

I should go to the consignment shop more often. The last time I went, I picked up a nice top that fit me just right for a whopping $1! You can't beat "almost free."

I don't think blogger likes me. I keep getting an error 404. Here goes nothing. If it does go through. We buy a lot of name brand clothes for Maya at the thrift stores.

That is definitely a bargain! I can understand not wanting to spend a lot on clothes if they will just get messed up. Of course, now I want donuts.

You did get a steal! I told my daughter we needed to find a good second hand store to shop for business suits for her. She just got a job working in sales in a high end jewelry store and wants to look the part. She priced just jackets at Dillards are was shocked at the price tags! I told her we could probably find something similar or even nicer at a good second hand store for less than half the price of new.

I'm with you, why pay retail when you can get more bang for your buck elsewhere? I am the queen of outlet and thrift store shopping, I am very proud of you. I crown thee!

Let's keep our priorities in place here - Donuts!

I LOVE thrifting and I finally got to go to my fav place yesterday for the first time in months. I think I actually got Ani turned on to thrifting yesterday when she scored two perfect for her shirts and a hoodie.

Ann, first, if I worked in a bakery I would have to buy new clothes each week with all the weight I'd gain :) I'm with you though, you can find some great stuff at second hand shops

I guess I need to start shopping with you! I'm not against shopping in second hand stores, but I can never seem to find anything that fits. Even when I was skinny. I'm still p{$$@d about spending hat $69.90 on ONE SINGLE pair of jeans. You'll be happy to know the store had a sale and on Friday I bought a pair of capris for just (HA!) $45.00. I feel like I'm being ripped off, but what can I do?

Ann said...

Jen it's always a great feeling walking out of that place

Cinnamon Girl yep, in store bakery, I'm the dept. manager.

Audrey You made my day, you are just the sweetest, thanks so much

Buggys absolutely, I've even found stuff in there with the tags still on at a steal.

Beaded tail I do the whole thing, I fry, fill, frost, and everything else. I wish I was done at 11 a.m. but then I would hate going in at 3.

Tahtimbo some second hand stores are pretty junky but even in those you can find some great stuff sometimes. It's just a matter of hitting them at the right time

FishHawk, or shall I call you Jerry.:) I honestly didn't even think about the size being on the tag but i certainly appreciate the hubba hubba don't hear that much anymore.

Kathy I used to go to one that had just kids clothes when my daughter was little, got some great stuff and then I always took her old clothes in so it went towards my account.

Grampy I had that same problem with the error message the other day.

DKMiller gotta love a bargain.

Vickie, thanks, I thought so too

Alterity button jewelry me too,

Junezach yes it sure does, Duke says Hi

Anne it's bad enough that every pair of shoes I wear to work is ruined in no time.

Split rock ranch The prices you pay in dept stores is outrageous, that's why I avoid them at all costs...lol

Me-Me woo hoo a crown for me...lol saving all that money also gives you extra moolah for fun stuff.

Grace well with the money I saved on the pants I can now afford to buy the donuts...lol

Lenox knits when my daughter was younger she was appalled by the thought of buying used clothes. I told her no one would know unless she told them.

Poetic Shutterbug I have to control myself sometimes. When you make donuts there's always a few that aren't good enough to put out so we leave those for the employees to eat. Guess who gets first dibs....lol I've actually started to put one in my mouth and then realized what I was doing and threw it out. Gotta have CONTROL....lol

Mee2 I know a couple people that I want to shop with, they always find the most incredible deals that just seem to disappear whenever I'm around. That would really suck having to pay that much for one pair of capris.

I love second hand stores and I love shopping with thrifty people! :D

The last time I bought a branded jeans was probably 15 years ago, just before I had my first child. Motherhood and family really change a woman!

great find! I absolutely love a bargain hunt :)

Nessa, me too especially since I never seem to find the great deals that other people do in the stores. Second hand stores are more fun anyway.

Sihui, gotta love a bargain. Just gives me a big thrill every time.
