Can't have it both ways.

As much as I would love to have the best of both worlds, it's just not going to happen. I can have one of the following: 1) a neat, organized computer/craft room or 2) a computer/craft room in which I'm creating something.
Ever since I did the last BIG cleaning of my space, I've been trying to be more careful about keeping it that way. Sometimes I do good, sometimes not. I have managed to be a little more aware of just how bad it's getting though.
All my good intentions get washed down the drain as soon as a creative spark hits. I don't have a whole lot of table space to work on so I like to sit on the floor where there's lots of room to spread out.

I want you to notice however that not all of that mess is mine. I see a few of Duke's things laying there too. He likes to hang out and watch me. He either lays in the doorway giving me that "there she goes again" look or if I'm sitting at my desk he likes to lay under my chair.
Even Duke thinks I'm hopeless.

I put a small kitchen table in my office just so I can have room to do other things.I have 2 computers and 2printers to add clutter, plus 4 shelving units.

You gotta have a mess in order to create properly. It's a matter of just cleaning it up when you are done. I'm forced to clean it up because I have a small house and I use the kitchen for my work space. We can't function if my stuff is around everywhere. I'm not sure if that is a curse or a blessing! ;)

Oh tell me about it. I live in a camper and when the creative bug hits me...you don't want to visit.:)

By my standards you are doing great. Like where is the mess?

I am totally with you! My husband moved my sewing room into a bigger room. I have done everything to stay neat and organized. But now the kids think their things go in there as well. And my son likes to lay under my chair while I sew!

No Duke loves you and he'll hang out with you no matter what you are doing. That's the way I see it.

Have a terrific day. My very best to Duke. :)

i hear you loud and clear. welcome to my world. lol. it's ok if i really did the mess... but most of the time, someone else make a great contribution in the mess department and no one else plans to clean up except me. hayyyy

Woof! Woof! it seems that if you move or take some stuff away ... you have a big space to put a big long table ... if not our photo is deceiving that you have a big floor space. Lots of Golden Woofs, Sugar

I admire your creative 'mess'! I only take out what I'm going to use and immediately put away what I'm not using. Sure there's no mess that way but I also feel limited and stifled in my creativity. I wish I could let go like you do!

I bet Duke loves helping you create! We can't get on the floor around here because Sadie takes that as a cue to come hover over us and pet her or she'll lay on us. She loves when we are on her level!

Duke looks all kinda sad - like he's feeling left out...poor woofie!

A little bit of mess is good for creativity :) i don't have enough table space too.. and when i need to do something bigger.. i hijack the dining table :D

Nessa said...

oh if only I'm nearby you could send Duke to me while you do your creative work :D

Well, at least you have a valid excuse for a clean-challenged room. I tried to use that excuse once for our dining room, but alas...it didn't fly.

I read the following quote (written by the blogger)on another blog...and I love it!

"Whenever creativity flourishes, tidyness takes a holiday."

It's my new motto! It can be yours too! : )

All I see when I look at your space is an excellent artist at work...if you were to try to do it 'tidily' then there would be little creativity to it. You should see the state of my kitchen when the kids get going...now that is a mess!!

Floor is also my favorite spot to do my things :)

Creativity is messy (if you do it right *grin*). My office/craft room is the ultimate disaster area... it would make any teenager proud :o)

Nope, I ain't going against Duke on this on.

You have to spread out to work. Look at it as spreading out your creativity. Also Duke is watching to make sure you don't get hurt.

Creativity is messy, baby! Duke can do no wrong in my book.

Oh when I get crafting my room gets to be total clutter! I'm just lucky in that it's in it's own separate space and I can get away with not always straightening it.

I think the clutter and disorganization is truly a sign of the creative juices flowing ~ don't you think? ;)

Have a Happy Crafty day Ann!

I think Duke is learning to do crafts. He looks very interested in your work.
I need to do a thorough cleaning of my office. It's a mess at the moment.

roschelle, my very messy creative genius..lol

out on the prairie I would add a table but it's a very small room

Lin my house is small too and even when I use the dining room table it just sort of gets pushed to one side.

Jean believe me this is a mild mess. I just get going and things keep getting pulled out and I can't stop

Nico at least I don't have the kids around anymore to help me add to it, although now without them here I have to take the blame for the whole mess

Sandee yep, he's pretty easy going, doesn't matter what I'm doing as long as he can hang out he's happy :)

ruthi that used to happen here but both kids are grown and out of the house. Now I have to wonder how much of the mess was my fault back then and I just blamed it on them...lol

sugar the picture is probably a little deceiving, the room is pretty small

beaded tail Duke used to take the same cue that Sadie does but I think he learned that when I'm in the zone it's better just to sit quietly and leave me go :)

Grace probably was hoping for a walk and all I wanted to do was sit on the floor and play with paper

Anny I've used the dining room table but then I end up leaving stuff sit too long and it's all right there for anyone to see how messy I am

Nessa sort of like a dog sitter huh?

tahtimbo I don't think my husband buys that as a valid excuse, he just sees a mess

marie I love that quote, I think I want to have that hanging on my wall :) I'll gladly make that my new motto

allotments4you it is very hard to be creative and neat at the same time, the two just don't go together

vanilla seven only problem with sitting on the floor is that I'm not as young as I used to be and it's not as easy to get back up anymore...lol

Jen I totally agree. So how do you explain to your kids that a messy craft room is ok but a messy bedroom isn't...lol

Fishhawk that's ok, didn't expect you too. I gladly keep a box of toys in the room for him next to my desk so he has something to do while I'm being crafty

grampy ya know I think that's exactly what he's doing. He's very protective

donna well I don't have kids around anymore so who else am I gonna blame...lol

bossy betty it sure is and Duke appreciates that

catherine mine is my daughters old bedroom so at least it's a room that only I use for anything.

Leeuna maybe he is, maybe he's planning on opening up his own shop one day. Maybe he'll even become wealthy enough to support me. Maybe I'll stop dreaming...lol

Duke says that he has to have some of his belongings in that room. If he is going to keep Mom company, he needs to have his toys close by.
We don't think that is messy at all. Just lots of creative projects going on. It is always hard to find a place for everything.
Have a great evening.

It's impossible to keep a creative space clean! That's what I've decided at least. I've been trying to keep my craft room somewhat organized, but it's not easy! To many projects happening at one time :)

Sharkbytes said...

You should see my spaces. That looks pretty tame. Where are the flying dog hair and the dust bunnies?

Ann said...

Marg and that is exactly why I put a little box right next to my desk for Duke to store all his little treasures :)

Audrey I hear ya. I no sooner clean it up than an idea hits me and before you know it it's a mess again

sharkbytes Duke's not much of a shedder so I don't really have a problem with dog hair. For some reason my house seems to be full of more cob webs than dust bunnies but I do have a few of those too.

When that creative spark hits, nothing else matters, meaning it has to be comfortable and if that means a mess, well a mess it is.
