Time to make the donuts

Sometimes during the first hour of work I get a little bored with no one to talk to. Not often, but sometimes. On those occasions I need to entertain myself with something other than just my job. I pulled out the cell phone and took a couple pictures.
The word sanitary on this thing cracks me up. It's very old and not the cleanest looking thing. Although you should see it on the days when I'm not working. Some people don't always clean it off very good and it's got dried on cake donut mix crusted all over it just about every Monday morning. I didn't think to take a picture of the whole thing so you could see what it looks like. That is the handy dandy little contraption that I fill with cake donut mix and use to crank the donuts out in to the fryer shortening.
And this would be my beat up looking fryer. It's been there much longer than I have. Notice the little black hole on the front of it next to the orange/yellow light? That used to be a little green light that melted out when one of the girls set the fryer on fire. Gee, all the exciting stuff happens on my days off.

Do you know what I call donuts? Gut balls. I like them but they don't like me. I've not had one in years. Sigh. Well looking at all this grease and not so sanitary looking stuff, I'm not feeling so bad about that. Just saying.

Have a terrific day. My best to Duke. :)

You should see the fryer at the restaurant where I work. It looks worse than this one and must be at least 50 years old.
Don't ya hate it when you miss the fun stuff?

That is too bad you missed that great fire. That all looks a tiny bit scary to us, making those donuts. Do they sell them or eat them all??? Or do you work in a donut shop??
LOL, Lots more questions.
Have a great day tomorrow.

First of all, those are gorgeous photos from your cell phone! Who needs a expensive camera when you can get shots like that with a cell phone!

And... you work where they make donuts!?!?!? Who cares if it's a beat up fryer. The smell must be heavenly! I'm going to bed tonight and dream about the donuts! :)

You get to make donuts???? Sheesh. Some people have all the yummy fun!

Making donuts would be fun for a few days. I understand no regular job is fun, but I love to watch others work. I always tell people that, and they always then look at me funny.

Wow ~ your cell phone take really good photos! I think I would have a hard time working all day and not having anyone to talk too. I think I would start talking to the donuts...as long as they didn't start talking back to me I would be OK. :)

Yep - sanitary would not be the first word to pop into my mind when seeing that photo. But it sure is a beautiful photo...cell phones sure come in handy!

Making donuts sounds like way more fun than selling insurance!
I took some photos at work a couple weeks ago - I'll have to share them sometime.

As much as I love donuts (and I do, I do!), and as much as I love to bake (and I do, I do!) I wouldn't want your job for all the tea in China - way too much work!

You should have cropped that first picture differently and then done a "What Is It" post. The prize could have been an initial card - you know like the one you made with the curled paper....(Have you noticed I am totally obsessed with that???)

I'll take a gross of old-fashioned sour cream cake donuts with extra glaze, please!!!

I would love to go and watch you at work. Just one day. I could do a photo shoot.Actually you would have to teach me how to make the donuts and you could take the pictures. Love to see pictures of your work place. The cakes are next.LOL
Have a good day.

I'll have maple frosting and a cup of joe.MMMMMM One restruant I used to go to opened a second. It was the old grill that made everything have that good flavor. The owner closed after a few months, nobody went back the second time. We also had favorite wait staff, but they had the best burgers in the world and looked real seedy. Seated 99, eleven at a time said a sign inside.HA!

You make the donuts and then make people happy all day long with your results. What a great job. Now I want a donut.

Great cell photos! I do not think I could work where they make donuts; I eat too many as it is and they really do not like me back!

Sandee gut balls is probably a good name for them :)

Jean Actually after hearing the bosses reaction the fire I'm glad it was her and not me :)

marg I work in a grocery store, I'm the manager of the bakery department so yes we do sell them. Probably one of the only places left around that actually still fries donuts

Beaded tail I would rather have THAT kind of fun stuff happen when I'm not around...lol

LDH believe it or not I can't even smell them. I guess I'm just so used to it I don't even notice it

Lin every morning, yes i do.

Ratty I agree anything is fun at first, it's once it becomes the daily grind that it loses it's appeal

Roschelle sorry, didn't mean to make you and your lip hungry :)

Vanilla I'm afraid I don't get all that creative with the donuts, just some sprinkles, coconut or chocolate frosting on top

Catherine it's only the first hour that I'm all alone. The store opens at 7 and that's when everyone else gets in

Marie this cell phone takes much better pictures than my last one did. I think selling insurance sounds like more fun than making donuts...lol

Grace there are days when I agree, it is way too much work. Especially for what they are paying me. Why don't I ever think of that "guess the picture" thing. I'm going to have to leave a note on my desk to remind me to do that

FishHawk ya know, we don't have those. I did order in some pre-fried sour cream cake donuts once but they didn't sell very good

Grampy, I think that would be lots of fun taking pictures of someone else doing my job. I must warn you though I hate training and I'm not very patient...lol

out on the prairie I've got a few customers that always complain because I don't make enough of the donuts with the maple frosting. I always tell them they can call ahead and order them to make sure they get what they want. Then when they are out of ear shot I add or get your lazy butt out of bed earlier and you could beat the other people in that buy them all first....lol

Anne there were a few years when I left the bakery department to be a store manager and when I decided I wanted to go back several people made the comment that "now we can have some good donuts again"...lol

allotments4you I don't think Duke has ever had a donut. I don't like to bring my work home with me :)

Nico you would think as long as I've been doing this I would be sick of them but I still can't resist them

Ooh, I'm a cake donut fan... I love them, seriously. I bet you have some good stories about cakewrecks... not that you've done any of those yourself you understand, but maybe the person who set the fryer on fire is responsible for a bit of cake wrecking too? (You know what I mean, right? The hilarious website by that name.)

I don't see a light? Or a fryer? Am I missing something?
I've always wanted to make donuts, my mom did when we were small. We had yeast donuts and they are a lot of work. Plus the smell of deep frying and I don't get a long really well.
Glad to know someone cleans it once in a while :)

Work? You have to work?

Ann said...

Ann I love that website. It cracks me up. I think I probably have done a few cakes over the years that probably would have qualified for cakewrecks

Audrey The second picture is the donut fryer. Are both pictures showing up for you? Luckily I don't have to do the yeast donuts from scratch. I just have to let them rise and then fry them

Sharkbytes, doesn't seem right does it? I say almost the same exact thing every morning when the alarm goes off.

Oh my gosh! I would way 300 lbs if I worked there - I truly love cake donuts with white icing and covered in coconut, YUM. Don't forget the small scoop of vanilla ice cream sitting atop that donut. Sorry, I lost track of the conversation when I saw DONUTS.

Donuts are my favourites. I have a weakness for them. If i am working in your place.. you'll probably find lots of donuts missing and me.. urmm.. me with a sugar coated mouth :p

I love your job! Making donuts looks so fun!

Joanne Olivieri said...

No you are just teasing me with those donuts. I must confess I love them and I love seeing them in these shots. What a cool place to work.

Ann said...

booker man I'll cut you a deal on the donuts, just let me know when you get that plastic card from your mom....lol

Miawa I really have to control myself. believe it or not there have been a couple of times when the donut was just centimeters away from my mouth and I had to force myself to stop...lol

anny I like the ones with either chocolate frosting or cinnamon sugar. the ones that aren't quite good enough to put out the employees are allowed to eat and guess who gets first dibs...lol

reeni it was fun for the first couple years. After 13 not so much, I think I can do it in my sleep now though

Poetic shutterbug as long as I have to work, this job isn't so bad.
